ABOUT ME

ABOUT ME

Physician • Mother • Author • Advocate • Human.

Pronouns: She/Her

I am the first female physician in my lineage.

I was born and raised in the lower mainland by my immigrant parents, Amanpal and Sanjiv Dosanjh. My brother is a physiatrist with a special interest in pain & spinal cord injuries. My sister, an actor in film, plays a physician on TV!

I am a mother to three loving daughters, a Shih-Tzu named Apollo (after the Greek God of Healing) and Godmother to a gorgeous husky named Beast.

I am a family physician, hospitalist and child & youth mental health advocate for nearly a decade. I have served as a Board member for my Division of Family Practice as well as CME lead. I have been involved in my hospital, my health authority, with UBC, and the MCC. I was the physician lead for Child Youth Mental Health Substance Use Collaborative in White Rock South Surrey and have been involved with the White Rock South Surrey Triage consulting team (a partnership with the Surrey school district, MCFD, psychiatry) and Delta Triage consulting team since their creation. I have a passion for collaborative work involving family doctors and specialists and allied health and patient partners, as evidenced by this work.

I have served in executive leadership roles as Secretary and President of BC Family Doctors. I have been a member of Doctors of BC’s Representative Assembly since its inception. Through these roles, I have had the great fortune to work closely with my colleagues at Specialists of BC. I have also served as a Doctors of BC delegate to the Canadian Medical Association General Assembly.

I am an author and have had the first of my children’s book series “Dreamland” published. I had the honour of it being introduced into the library at Canuck Place and some palliative care units. I also have a passion for mental health literacy and curriculum change within the educational system. I serve on the board of directors for Glarea Elevated Learning Academy.

I am not only a provider but a well-known recipient of our healthcare system. As a patient I have had multiple surgeries and been dependent on many of my specialist colleagues throughout my own personal healthcare journey. The trajectory of my personal health consequences and sequelae have compelled me to become a fierce advocate for a better system and better recognition of the extraordinary work physicians do.

My children and I have all had serious medical challenges, during which we received care from colleagues who are family doctors, surgeons, obstetricians, paediatricians, neurologists, infectious disease specialists, gastroenterologists, radiologists, orthopaedic surgeons, and emergency physicians.

In each instance I have relied on my wonderful colleagues, both the ones who took care of me and my family and the ones who took care of my patients and calls. I really understand how much we all need each other to deliver the best care.

2020, has been quite the year, my sister and her fiancé (also an ER doc!) got quite sick with Covid in the early stages. My father got diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in May of this year. Again, the strength and support of exceptional physician colleagues has helped lighten the load.

These are just a few of my family’s touch points with healthcare, which I am sure many of you can relate to. It echoes my personal and professional life. Medicine truly touches my life in more ways than one. When I think of advocacy I do think of the quadruple aim and how we could truly change for the better.

What I have learned is the power within each of the providers, each of YOU, my colleagues is compassion, expertise and resilience. I am sincerely grateful to everyone that has been a part of my journey and recognize all patients' journeys in this province. I believe recognizing individual efforts and the collective efforts of our physician community is of utmost importance.

I lead my life with purpose, integrity and authenticity. I am committed to creating small ripples of change which may one day lead to a universal wave of humanity, compassion and empowerment of all citizens. I am passionate about social justice, system reform, equity and leadership. In addition to medicine...I enjoy reading non-fiction, creative writing, meditation, cycling, cooking, dancing, basketball, traveling and deep conversations. I am wholeheartedly committed to leaving the world a bit better than I found it. I believe the choice is ours to be the change we wish to see in the world.
